Financial Harmony for Couples

Working with couples has evolved into a significant part of my practice and I find it deeply fulfilling. The transformation I’ve witnessed watching partners move from fear and mistrust towards cooperation and resonance opens up countless possibilities towards an abundant future. Many couples are referred by couples’ counselors who prefer not to wade into the murky waters of finance. Other couples reach out frustrated after interviewing financial planners and wealth advisors who wind up attempting to sell products. Let’s face it, a therapist won’t teach you smart “money moves” and your CFP can’t hold space for the turbulence in your relationship!

My Process With Couples

Couples’ sessions foster a safe, strong container where both partners feel seen and heard. We begin by exploring how early childhood memories of money influence present day attitudes and behaviors. Once revealed, these patterns are much easier to explore, reframe and heal. This is essential in achieving a couples’ harmonious financial future. As relationship building skills are acquired, couples become more confident facing challenging topics such as:

  • Setting individual, shared and separate financial goals and how to allow them to co-exist harmoniously

  • Naming, addressing and owning fear inducing spending behaviors

  • Identifying each others’ strengths and weaknesses around money

  • Boundary setting regarding loans to friends and family

Relational communication skills offer benefits which extend to other areas where couples may experience difficulty communicating openly and honestly. My work with couples draws from extensive training received in the Gottman Method, Harville Hendrix’ Imago Relationship Therapy and Thomas Huebl’s Transparent Communication. Through this challenging yet highly rewarding work, couples overcome obstacles otherwise blocking a shared life of abundance!

What Couples Have to Say About The Moolah Doula

“Working with Joanna was so beneficial for me and my partner. We came to Joanna because as a couple we were not seeing eye to eye on our financial situation, and after just a couple sessions we were better able to have more productive and compassionate discussions about money. It was easy to talk with Joanna, it felt safe to be completely open and transparent about such a sensitive and charged topic. The sessions were a beautiful combination of inner emotional work around our relationship to money and really practical insight for moving forward. We feel like we have a great set of tools to guide us not only in our money conversations, but our communication in general.”  - Jennifer Mulak

“We began working with Joanna after feeling unsettled with a traditional financial advisor experience. We knew we needed support with budgeting, investing, and other standard financial decisions, but we also wanted to reset our outlook on wealth and wealth management. Joanna was the perfect fit and helped us more than we could have imagined. Our sessions left us feeling empowered, heard, and taken care of which is exactly the kind of relationship we desired. We would wholeheartedly recommend Joanna to anyone that is wanting a more holistic look at their financial picture.”  - Molly Markey
